We left Wapiti campground and turned north towards Prince George on the Yellowhead Highway. About an hour into our journey, we see a truck parked on the side of the road, with a chap with large telescopic sights trained on a point at the edge of the meadow.
We realised he was looking at a bear, so we stopped and turned around, pulling in and jumping out. And indeed there was a black bear, happily eating dandelions on the meadows edge, about 150 yards from where we stood.
We watched him for a good 15 minutes before he disappeared into the woods.
We stop at Dome Creek Falls which were amazing for the volume of water going over the falls, and we watched some very brave kayakers going down the rapids.
We stop at Beaver Creek where we walked along the river path for a mile or so, encountering fresh bear poo on the way. Back on the road, we see another 2 or 3 bears by the roadside, but they didn’t stay around long enough to be caught on film.
We pulled in at Ancient Woods trail head and set out on the most amazing trail, firstly on a grassy very wet path, over a rivulet, and then turned into the forest on an incredible mossy woody path going ever upwards until we came to a stream. We followed this dank trail for around 1.5 miles, it was arduous going, steep, rooty and slippery but very beautiful, and the scent of wet moss, wood and pine was very strong.
After about 45 minutes we turn around and head back.
We follow the Yellow Head highway for another 50 miles or so, sighting another 4 bears on the verges along the way, and then pulled in at Purden Lake campground just east of Prince George. It was a lovely spot on the lake, we cooked steak on the fire under our awning.
