From Drury Creek, we joined the Klondike Loop to Carmacks. Here we did a spot of admin - there is a rudimentary but fully working laundromat, a grocery store and bar which sold ‘off sales’ alcohol - you choose what you want from a list, and they retrieve it from the stores. We were hopeful at first with things like Bombay Sapphire and Grey Goose gins on the list, but alas they were out of stock! So we went for a Gilbeys Gin, and Absolut Vodka, but that was also out of stock. Setting for the Gilbeys and a Beefeater, plus a couple of bottles of white wine, we then had a really cold pint of Yukon Gold, which we weren’t allowed to take to the bench just outside as it was against regulations.

We filled up with fuel, then o to Stewart Crossing where there was a jetwash, so we took full advantage and gave Pelican a really good clean, he was filthy from all the dust collected from the untarmacked Campbell Highway.

Just outside Stewart Crossing we saw a young black bear on the side of the road, which then crossed over to join its friend, a lighter coloured brown bear, still a ‘black bear’. They were totally unconcerned by us and carried on eating the dandelions and verge vegetation.

Picking up speed again, we continued along the Klondike Highway through massive road construction works with huge excavators lined up, and marvelled at the challenges of road building in this wilderness.

An hour or so later we arrive at our campsite at Moose Creek in the forest, and it is completely deserted. We pick a nice flat spot, set the fire and cook burgers and mash.
